You’d think by now Willie Nelson wouldn’t need to remind fans of his roots by naming his album Country Music, but that’s what he’s done on his superb 2010 release (his first for Rounder Records). Top to bottom it’s among his most enjoyable albums in ages.

It’s a collection of old-school honky-tonk classics from the likes of Ernest Tubb, Merle Travis, and The Delmore Brothers (most of which Nelson probably had memorized decades ago). Producer T-Bone Burnett helped develop the sparse arrangements, and the result is easygoing and beautiful–pure, unadulterated Country Music.
