Formerly known as Peggy Sue and the Pirates, the Brighton trio of Rosa Rex, Katy Klaw and Olly Joyce — now known as Peggy Sue — dropped their new album, Acrobats, on Yep Roc last month. A sonic departure from their first album, Fossils and Other Phantoms, the set opens with today’s Free MP3 of the Day, “Cut My Teeth.”
Seeking to make an album that is “much louder” than their first, the band enlisted producer John Parish (P.J. Harvey, Sparklehorse), threw away their acoustic guitars almost entirely and decided to open the album with the heavy-duty “Cut My Teeth.”
For the trio, “Cut My Teeth” harkens back to the music they listened to in their youth, bands like the Breeders and Sonic Youth. “We’d write the guitar parts before vocals, which was backwards for us,” says Rosa of the band’s change of focus.
“I’m really proud of it,” says Katy of the tune. “I see it as a sort of prologue – it tells the story of the movement from our first to our second album.”
