Civil Twilight were born in Cape Town, South Africa, the creation of Andrew and Steven McKellar. Their musical household — Dad was into jazz, Mom plays classical piano — inspired the teenage brothers to grab some instruments and start their own band (with Steven picking up the bass and Andrew trying out the guitar).
Convincing friend Richard Wouters to jump from bass to drums, the trio found a garage and started working on their sound. In 2005, they landed in LA, cut their first album, Human, for One October Records and watched their music immediately picked up by TV shows like One Tree Hill.
You might recognize today’s Free MP3 of the Day, “Letters From The Sky,” by its many appearances on TV: it was featured at the end of Episode 11 of Harper’s Island, during season 7 of of the aforementioned One Tree Hill as well as at the end of the film I Am Number Four.
You’ll also likely find it in a set that Civil Twilight will be tearing through this weekend in Florida. They’ll join a potent lineup of bands for the two-day Orlando Calling Festival at 2:15PM Saturday on the FreeCreditScore.com Stage.
