You might remember the musical question we asked back in August when we offered our first Free MP3 of the Day by [mp3com-artist]Lisa Lavie[/mp3com-artist]. (Hint: it involved what it takes to get 1.5 million YouTube views.) We have to ask it again today because her cut "Angel" has topped 7.5 million views (and, even though it's four years old, is still one of the best R&B cuts we've given away this year). A childhood prodigy from Montreal, Lisa's earliest influences were [mp3com-artist]Mariah Carey[/mp3com-artist], [mp3com-artist]Brian McKnight[/mp3com-artist] and [mp3com-artist]Boyz II Men[/mp3com-artist] but “Angel” is a deeper, darker piece of R&B. Over a spare instrumental arrangement, Lavie growls and purrs, her voice reminding us of classic soul goddesses like [mp3com-artist]Millie Jackson[/mp3com-artist] and [mp3com-artist]Nina Simone[/mp3com-artist]. One listen and it's easy to see why she's getting those millons of views: it starts with talent (which she has to spare), continues with looks (see those pix) and ends with great material. That's the word on Lisa Lavie, a well-deserved R&B Best of 2011.
