For Day 2 of our Hip Hop Playlist we’re giving you some tracks from artists that are pushing the genre in new directions.
These innovative tracks are are pretty far outside the parameters of radio-ready, mainstream hip hop, but that isn’t to say they aren’t just as cool (or as accessible).
Pigeon John raps over beautiful acoustic melodies that are accentuated with electronic touches. His song “Before We’re Gone” sounds almost like a Tom Petty track, if Tom Petty had a nice flow. The instrumentals are certainly a far cry from the bass heavy and auto-tuned effects we’ve come to expect in a hip hop track, but it succeeds on its own terms.
Tor is a Vancouver based DJ who made beats from samples of Sufjan Steven’s masterpiece “Come on Feel the Illinoise” and mixed them with some of his favorite rap verses. The result is a pretty cool mixture of sound that works surprisingly well. His beats are hot!
