Just like The Pharcyde‘s Imani exclaims in “Runnin’,” it’s 1995!

To help you gear up to see Brie Larson kick butt in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, in theaters now, we’re taking you back… way back… back into time. Let’s set the scene:

We’ve lost Selena, Pierce Brosnan is 007, OJ is acquitted, Michael Jordan is back to save the NBA (he thought) and Captain Marvel is saving the world for the first time. While all this is going down, Coolio, Madonna and TLC top the charts.

Can you hear it? Are you in the groove? We’ll help: Here are the top 10 songs from the year smack in the middle of the ’90s, based on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles list.

10. “This Is How We Do It” – Montell Jordan

Admit it: Be it 1995 or 2019, you’re still doing the Roger Rabbit to this one.

9. “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One of Dem Days)” – Monica

Guys just don’t understand what it’s like to have one of “dem” days — you know the ones. So Monica hooked it up with this song to help explain. They still don’t get it, though.

3. “Creep” – TLC

With Crazysexycool — and even before — T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli gave girls examples of what confident, beautiful, sexy young women sound like. This single about, well, cheating had parents saying “oh no,” but ’90s teens saying “yes, please!”

2. “Waterfalls” – TLC

Oh yes: TLC dominated the chart in ’95. They weren’t content to simply teach girls to be unapologetic (long before Rihanna did), they also shared the harsh realities of the drug and HIV/AIDS epidemics the country was dealing with in the ’90s.

1. “Gangsta’s Paradise” – Coolio featuring L.V.

The Stevie Wonder sample. The Coolio braids. The… Michelle Pfieffer? This introspective single — featured in everyone’s favorite ’90s white savior movie, Dangerous Minds — sits at No. 1 on this list and No. 89 on Billboard’s list of the greatest songs of all time. Coolio earned a Grammy award for Best Rap Solo Performance for the song, as well as two MTV VMAs, which were a much bigger deal back in the ’90s. Yet another bonus: This hit inspired the Weird Al parody “Amish Paradise.”
