Today’s survey of the nation’s nightlife sees Tortoise in Chicago, Parenthetical Girls in Cleveland, Alvin Risk in LA and free MP3s right here on your computer.

The Empty Bottle on Chi-Town’s Western Avenue hosts tonight’s solo show from hometown boys Tortoise. Built in the 80s by a pair who envisioned themselves a modern day Sly & Robbie, Tortoise’s 30 year history has seen them run roughshod over just about every genre known to listening man, from jazz to punk to krautrock.

“Prepare Your Coffin” is from Beacons of Ancestorship, their Thrill Jockey release from 2009.

LA is the last stop on our survey of tonight’s live music, the place where you’ll find Alvin Risk holding court.

Remixer Risk will be on the opening bill with KOAN Sound at Dim Mak Studios, the Hollywood Boulevard locale where producer of the hour, Skrillex, will be headlining the proceedings.

Here’s a taste of Risk called “Etheric Device.”
