Welcome to Volume 8 of the RCRD LBL Essentials series. Today we’ve got some special tracks for you, running the gamut from indie to electronic to classic soul. Hear new music from Charles Bradley, Little Dragon,Islands, and others!
It’s hard to believe, but at 62 years old Charles Bradley is just releasing his debut album. He’s an amazing singer, his voice is warm and emotive, bearing the scars of a lifetime of use. But what age may have detracted from his voice in terms of range, it makes up for by adding a certain gravitas that gives weight to his lyrics. “Heartaches & Pain” is a pure vintage soul track, reminiscent of the genre’s glory days.
Mux Mool is doing the opposite of Charles Bradley, instead of looking to the past he is blasting funk and soul into the future with his electronic music. Synth lines, hip hop beats, and soul horn stabs are are blended into one seamless fusion on his track “Palace Chalice.”
Indie veteransIslands are back after a two year hiatus following their previous album, 2009’s Vapours. “This Is Not a Song” is (in fact) a song from their upcoming LP A Sleep and A Forgetting. Though consistent with the high quality of their past work, “This Is Not a Song” is a bit of a departure from Island’s standard territory. A moving piano ballad, it shows them to be capable working with a variety of styles.
Following that, we’ve got a great remix from Little Dragon, some quiet, moody electro fromGotye, straight up rock n’ roll from Kaiser Chiefs and a sweet little electro pop tune from Fol Chen. So what are you waiting for? Get in there and start listening!
