Prime Cuts Playlist: Tuba Tuesday!

Yeah, baby, it’s Tuba Tuesday!

Alberti Brass

Let’s start with the classical and work our way toward the crazy.

The [mp3com-artist]Alberti Brass[/mp3com-artist] was founded some dozen years ago by Paul Sharp & Simon Munday (trumpets), Adam Walters (horn), David Whitehouse (trombone) and Peter Smith (tuba). All graduates of Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music in London, they’ve individually and collectively played with just about everyone in the city who matters, from the BBC to the London Phil.

Mr. Smith rocks the upper range of the tuba on this track.

The Dixie Bubbles Jazz Band

Even with the help of Google translate, we’re not entirely sure what the story is with the [mp3com-artist]Dixie Bubble Jazz Band[/mp3com-artist]. What we know is they’re from Germany, not the French Quarter, but you’d never know it: channeling the second line through the [mp3com-artist]Meters[/mp3com-artist], these cats are pretty funky (with props to the tuba man, for sure).

The Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club

The Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club

The name of the [mp3com-artist]Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club[/mp3com-artist], alone, should give an indication of what’s to be found in their self-described “‘junkyard cabaret’ and New Orleans jazz.” Further research says they’re a seven piece outfit from Oakland that consider [mp3com-artist]Curtis Mayfield[/mp3com-artist] and [mp3com-artist]Louis Armstrong[/mp3com-artist] among their key influences.

Yeah, we hear that.
