Experimental electronica is the order of the day as we dig into our catalog for another Prime Cuts Playlist featuring [mp3com-artist]Dreadlock Tales[/mp3com-artist], [mp3com-artist]Blue Vitriol[/mp3com-artist] and our favorite band name of the week, [mp3com-artist]Topless in the Turning Lane[/mp3com-artist]. [caption id="attachment_82433" align="alignnone" width="405" caption="Dreadlock Tales"][/caption] We introduced Dreadlock Tales a few weeks ago in our Rock Steady playlist. They're an experimental collective out of Helsinki that was formed by Kimmo Tyni and Vallo Lankinen. Though dub is at the heart of what they do, they also get into all kinds of ambient electronic textures, many reminiscent of [mp3com-artist]Pink Floyd[/mp3com-artist]. This one, "Kalewatar," sounds particularly slippery floating through a good pair of headphones. At work together for the better part of a decade, this Eno-esque piece from their shared EP The Bad Sleep Well sounds like the sound track to an airport at midnight or incidental music to a new version of To Kill A Mockingbird. Not exactly our words but the words of band member Siobhan Freethy. She provides vocals for the "The Life/Times of Herbert, Part 2," a completely weird but strangely infectious song of :43 seconds. The band's Faceboook page says the group is an "up-and-coming experimental band featuring the talents of Garrison Blagg, Cory Alex-Mother-Fuckin-zander, Sean Simpson, Jason Wright, Carl J. Williams II, and Trevor Mullis." We're not sure about that. We just like their name.
