We’re not sure why Jack Black was asked to review a new Brit goth-rock outfit Esben and the Witch while doing a promo run Guilliver’s Travels, but we’re glad someone asked him because it’s absolutely funny. Is he a fan? Let’s just say he was caught saying: “Someone may be going for a music Oscar here!”
Find out what Jack Black thinks of these British newcomers, plus listen to a full album stream of the band’s stunning debut record called Violet Cries slated for release February 8th, 2011 on Matador Records.
According to Matador’s Website, Jack Black was doing a promo tour for his recent film based on Jonathan Swift’s classic Gulliver’s Travels for Intro Magazine in Germany. Watch the interview, it’s definitely worth a watch!
Despite what Jack Black thinks about the band, I think they’re a whole lot cooler than its name suggests. Introducing the world to a mixture of brooding electronics mixed with stark, post-punk, and brittle, lo-fi beats (think a cross between Portishead and Siouxsie and the Banshees) Esben and the Witch yield an incredible and sophisticated goth power.
Since emerging in the latter months of 2009, the trio caught the attention of Matador Records after a self-released EP entitled 33 attracted significant attention, making Esben and the Witch the first British band to be signed on the label in years. Recently the band completed a US tour with the Foals, and have toured the Europe with bands like xx, Passion Pit and Deerhunter.
So, without further ado, check out a premiere of Violet Cries, in full, via Stereogum which is slated for release on February 8th 2011. And, if you like it as much as I do, the band is offering a free MP3 of “Warpath”, plus a few remixes of “Marching Song” here, and another favorite called “Skeleton Swoon” from fellow Brits Worried About Satan which is originally featured on the very first EP which the band self released last year.
Watch a video for “Warpath” below!
