Springing from a DIY fanzine operation run by two high school friends in Illinois, Polyvinyl Records made its debut in July of 1995 with one split 7” single. With their first releases by Midwestern bands such as [mp3com-artist]Braid [/mp3com-artist]and [mp3com-artist]Rainer Maria[/mp3com-artist], Polyvinyl captured a snapshot of a burgeoning indie scene, and continued to grow as those artists gained popularity - all the while remaining dedicated to fostering talent with a 50/50 profit-share. They've since released a host of bands who've pushed the boundaries of indie-rock: arch experimentalists Joan of Arc and electronic-tinged duo Mates of State among them. The label has now grown into an international operation, counting European bands such as Casiokids (Norway) and Loney, dear (Sweden) on their roster, as well as Australians Architecture in Helsinki.
