Describing a band as soulful, Southern, groove rock ought to be somewhat redundant. Rock ‘n’ Roll was born of these sounds in the South, but somewhere along the way, most emerging rock artists drifted in another direction. Sure, there’s a time and a place for introspective, angst ridden, Chuck-Taylor-starin' rock, but it’s refreshing to hear Knoxville’s [lastfm]the Dirty Guv’nahs[/lastfm]’ uplifting and sweet-sounding, gospel rooted Rock 'n' Roll, especially at a time when everything else in the world can seem so bleak. The Guv’nahs recorded their latest album Youth is in our Blood at [lastfm]Levon Helm[/lastfm]’s studios in Woodstock and played in one of his legendary Midnight Rambles while they were there, and that’s more than a little serious street cred. If they haven’t played in your town yet, they probably will soon, but in the mean time, you can download “We’ll be the Light” below and check out the video under that, and a whole bunch of other great live clips here.
