If you think you know [mp3com-artist]Deep Purple[/mp3com-artist] then think again. A new set from Eagle Rock Entertainment paints the classic quintet in a wholly different light.

That light is the glow of the lamps used to light up a full orchestra, the setting upon which Deep Purple turned out a blazing 17-song, 115-minute performance last summer in Switzerland.

The setting was the 45th anniversary presentation of the Montreux Jazz Festival and the moment was venerable festival’s closing night. With the support of a full orchestra — under the baton of Stephen Bentley-Klein — the band put a classic spin on classic rock, playing tunes like “Hush,” “Woman From Tokyo” and “Lazy” with the full blush of violins, violas, cellos and string basses.

Courtesy of the band, we’ve got a free download of a stellar cut from the set, “Strange Kind of Woman.” Apropos to the setting, original members Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover, along with guitarist Steve Morse and keyboardist Don Airey, gave this version of the ’71 classic a decidedly jazzier groove.

Morse contributes a solo that conquers both the rock and the jazz genres with equal aplomb and Gillan’s voice couldn’t be stronger. The orchestra doesn’t have a heavy presence on this song as it does elsewhere but it’s a delicious taste of the energy that came from that special night in Montreux.
