CMJ 2011: Deli Showcase at Pianos

|

Last night at Pianos bar in New York’s Lower East Side, Deli magazine put together a great CMJ showcase. The theme of the night was good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll with bands like [mp3com-artist]The Ill Fits[/mp3com-artist], [mp3com-artist]Caveman [/mp3com-artist]and [mp3com-artist]The Stepkids[/mp3com-artist].

Indie supergroup [mp3com-artist]The Ill Fits[/mp3com-artist] opened things up, which a hard hitting set of sweaty, beer soaked songs.  Comprised of members of [mp3com-artist]MGMT[/mp3com-artist], [mp3com-artist]Amazing Baby[/mp3com-artist], and [mp3com-artist]Foreign Islands[/mp3com-artist], and fronted by Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, [mp3com-artist]The Ill Fits[/mp3com-artist] boasts an impressive pedigree.  Their music reflects this as well, as they cranked out and energetic set filled with awesome guitar licks, smooth basslines and wailing vocals.

One of the fastest rising Brooklyn bands, [mp3com-artist]Caveman [/mp3com-artist]delivered a set that put the full range of their sound on display.  From catchy indie pop to brooding dirges to euphoric rock outs, these guys can do it all with style.

Connecticut based band [mp3com-artist]The Stepkids[/mp3com-artist] really stole the show at the end of the night though with their blend of funk, soul and psychedelic rock. Things was running behind schedule (as is always the case with CMJ) and the guys didn’t get to started til 1:30 a.m. But when they took the stage in matching all white uniforms and instruments everyone knew they were in for something special.

When they started playing, however, it was soon apparent that they would exceed everyone’s expectations. Each member of the band possessed a strong command over their instrument, laying down some serious grooves as the projector played an ingenious DIY lightshow on their uniforms and backdrop. Each member of the three piece band really brought something to the table – all three take turns singing lead vocals and taking center stage with their instrument.
