The tag is mostly used as a means to filter artists who have a minimum amount of listeners, while being closely tied to the group 'under 2000 listeners'. The tag also sees use by musicians and artists who wish to promote themselves for having a smaller audience, and often artists are 'untagged' by users once they breach the 2000 listeners benchmark. Originally the idea for the tag came from the requirement of the game called Champion of Champions that requires that you listen to music that has less than 2000 listeners.
