Soulful describes music that is full of emotion and vigor (i.e. full of "soul"). The quality of "having soul" is often used in the context of a performer or a work in soul music, a music genre originating in the United States combining elements of gospel music and rhythm and blues. Soul music bloomed in the 60s unto the 70s, the genre was popularized by labels such as Stax and Motown. The soul genre is still evolving today, its most current form being neo soul.
