As someone who grew up in the 90’s, it’s hard to believe that MxPx are turning 20 this year. Their California skate-punk sound is something that is quintessentially youthful, but they, along with like minded groups such as Green Day andNoFX, have proven their longevity by continuing with album after album of fun, energetic punk.
Situated on the Gulf coast in Alabama, the Hangout Music Festival offers an amazing combination of a music festival and beach vacation. The festival takes place May 18-20 with performances from headliners like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dave Matthews Band and Jack White. Now in its third year of existence, the Hangout Music Festival has established itself as one of the most laid-back, feel good festivals around.
Dry the River frontman Peter Liddle describes his band’s sound as “folky gospel music played by a post-punk band.” That may sound like a pretty wide range of influneces for a band, but when you hear song’s like “New Ceremony,” off of their debut LP Shallow Bed you can see where Liddle is coming from.
The Avengers were one of the first, and the best, punk bands to emerge from the San Francisco punk scene in the late 70s. True to classic punk form, they shone briefly and brightly – they were together for only two years and didn’t release an album during that time, instead building their reputation through their all-out live performances.
Though she rose to fame with seminal Cali-punk band The Avengers, Penelope Houston has had an equally fruitful career as a pioneering singer-songwriter. The same courage that allowed her, as a 20 year old girl, to front a punk band in the late 70’s has informed her music at every step of her career.
Hailing from Orlando, Florida, pop-rockers A Hero’s Fate bring a combination of energy, melody and humor to their music. Following up on the success of their 2010 debut album, they’ve recently released their second album Terms and Conditions.
