Art Chapman, “I Sang Dixie”

It’s not just Art Chapman‘s mustache, hat, and facial features that remind us of Marty Robbins, but also his easy, warm voice and the gently rolling, late-summer country flavor of his song “I Sang Dixie.”

Possum Jenkins, “Beside The Pines”

A healthy North Carolina twang runs through the music of Possum Jenkins, a quintet whose members hail from Winston-Salem and Boone, and who play a gritty version of barroom honky-tonk (or, you might say, a countrified version of hillbilly rock ‘n roll). Spotlight On Country Music Month

Did you know that October is Country Music Month? It was first designated back in 1964 by the Country Music Association to celebrate the heritage of the music, the Grand Ole Opry, and the annual CMA awards, which–guess what–also traditionally happen in October or November (this year it’s Nov. 9). A not-so-strange coincidence, perhaps–but whatever the origin, it’s a good excuse to dig deep into the world of country music, including surfacing some great free country music downloads on MP3.com.

Merle Haggard, “Working in Tennessee”

For many people, the word “country” starts with the letter “c”. Where we come from it starts with a capital “M” and is spelled “M-E-R-L-E.”

The original outlaw has a new one coming out next month and the nice people at Vanguard are sharing the title cut for free.
