Free MP3: Tim Kasher "Cold Love"

Oct 29, 2010 7:00 AM by Staff

I’m guessing Tim Kasher listened to a lot of punk and new wave growing up. Or maybe he’s just one of those super creative types who was born to rock (and grew up with Conor Oberst). Either way, “Cold Love” has a comforting, timeless way about it.

Kavinsky "Nightcall (Breakbot Remix)"

Chomeo may be the top vocoder-using electro band right now, but we’ll let Kavinsky hold the title for today (at least). With call-and-response vocals, there’s futuristic chemistry going on between him and Lovefoxxx (CSS) on “Nightcall.” Oh yeah, and the production work by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) doesn’t hurt either.

Free MP3: Railroad Earth "Long Walk Home"

Oct 27, 2010 7:00 AM by Staff

We were due for a good sing-a-long, and Railroad Earth hits the right chords to allow that on “Long Walk Home.” Much like Alison Krauss, these Jersey boys are better found at country/bluegrass festivals, yet are welcome in the city as well.

Deer Tick "Piece By Piece, Frame By Frame"

Oct 26, 2010 7:00 AM by Staff

While folk stars like Iron & Wine and The Tallest Man On Earth sellout concert halls, we’re noticing that indie ain’t so indie anymore. Deer Tick has even gained the unlikely support of mainstream media’s Brian Williams (yes, the NBC Nightly News anchor). On “Piece By Piece, Frame By Frame,” familiar acoustic guitar chords underline the haunting piano lines and vocal melody of John McCauley.

Free MP3: Isaac Russell "Lighthouse"

Oct 25, 2010 7:00 AM by Staff

With a raspy-smooth voice, emerging songwriter Isaac Russell is one to watch this year. “Lighthouse,” has all the elements of a perfect pop song–we just wish it was a minute or two longer (I guess that’s why the repeat button was invented).

Free MP3: Yair Yona "Brave Walls"

With so much over-produced music out there these days, it’s refreshing to hear the guitar at it’s purest. Yair Yona‘s instrumental track, “Brave Walls,” showcases European folk with a western kick–a perfect song for traveling through the countryside (maybe because I wrote this on the train).

Free MP3: Vonnegutt "Bright Eyes"

Oct 21, 2010 10:32 AM by Ryan S.

Much like Pharrell and his N.E.R.D. crew, Vonnegutt takes hip-hop to the next level with real instruments and real singing. The witty lyrics of “Bright Eyes” (a.k.a. the “I think I’m in love” song) should hit home for anyone in seach of a new squeeze.

If the Broadway show FELA! is the first time you’ve heard of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, then you have serious catching up to do. As the pioneer of Afrobeat (Africa’s answer to James Brown), his legacy continues to ring throughout the world today. Free MP3: The Orbans "Like A Liar"

Oct 19, 2010 7:00 AM by Staff

In the alt-country vein of Ryan Adams, The Orbans bring their rural style to the city (and vice versa). Vocalist Peter Black admits he’s a liar in their standout track, “Like A Liar,” which only leads us to wonder if he’s telling the truth about that.

Free MP3: Hyper Crush, 'Ayo (Produced By Diplo)'

As the mastermind behind M.I.A’s debut album, Arular, Diplo continues to make his (and other artist’s) dreams come true. His latest production on Hyper Crush’s club track “Ayo” sounds a lot like his work with his famous ex-girlfriend, but hey, if it ain’t broke…
