Chomeo may be the top vocoder-using electro band right now, but we’ll let Kavinsky hold the title for today (at least). With call-and-response vocals, there’s futuristic chemistry going on between him and Lovefoxxx (CSS) on “Nightcall.” Oh yeah, and the production work by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (Daft Punk) doesn’t hurt either.
While folk stars like Iron & Wine and The Tallest Man On Earth sellout concert halls, we’re noticing that indie ain’t so indie anymore. Deer Tick has even gained the unlikely support of mainstream media’s Brian Williams (yes, the NBC Nightly News anchor). On “Piece By Piece, Frame By Frame,” familiar acoustic guitar chords underline the haunting piano lines and vocal melody of John McCauley.
With so much over-produced music out there these days, it’s refreshing to hear the guitar at it’s purest. Yair Yona‘s instrumental track, “Brave Walls,” showcases European folk with a western kick–a perfect song for traveling through the countryside (maybe because I wrote this on the train).
If the Broadway show FELA! is the first time you’ve heard of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, then you have serious catching up to do. As the pioneer of Afrobeat (Africa’s answer to James Brown), his legacy continues to ring throughout the world today. Knitting Factory Records just re-released a third set of his recordings, including Zombie, which is just one of the 11 albums he put out from 1976-1980!
As the mastermind behind M.I.A’s debut album, Arular, Diplo continues to make his (and other artist’s) dreams come true. His latest production on Hyper Crush’s club track “Ayo” sounds a lot like his work with his famous ex-girlfriend, but hey, if it ain’t broke…
