Best Of 2011: Lisa Lavie, “Angel”

You might remember the musical question we asked back in August when we offered our first Free MP3 of the Day by Lisa Lavie. (Hint: it involved what it takes to get 1.5 million YouTube views.) We have to ask it again today because her cut “Angel” has topped 7.5 million views (and, even though it’s four years old, is still one of the best R&B cuts we’ve given away this year).

Best of 2011: J.J. Grey And Mofro, “War”

“One of the greatest white trash trailer park blues rock bands playing today.” In a world where every band is oiled up with the grease of hyperbole, it would be easy to dismiss such self-acclaim. But, in the case of J.J. Grey and Mofro, it’s all true.

Best Of MP3.com 2011: Vol. 5

Ah, music. It’s what gets us up in the morning and keeps us going all year long.  Since our last Spotlight on holiday music we’ve added some new songs to the site, a handful of which our entire staff has highlighted in their “best-of” features. And, to fuel our lists even further, I’ve assembled my own favorite of–what else–free MP3s.

From the dark atmospherics of HTRK to the electronic-pop stylings of Little Dragon, here are my top favorite songs on Mp3.com.

Best Of MP3.com 2011: Vol. 4

These days, country music can mean a whole lot of things. It can mean the traditional croon and swoon style of Patsy Cline and Hank Williams (both of whom seem to pop up on everyone’s influence list, even the rock and rollers). “Country” can mean the thumping bass and frantic banjo of bluegrass, the gritty grimy guitar of Neil Young or a classic four chord homage to the working class hero. For this Best of MP3.com 2011 list, we offer 10 Kinds Of Country.

Best Of MP3.com 2011: Vol. 3

These picks come from Owen Stretch, the director of content at one of our sister sites, MetroLyrics.com.

To give you an idea of where I was coming from when I put together this MP3.com Best Of 2011 list, I should tell you that right now I’m sitting in an office in Vancouver, Canada. It’s cold in Canada in December (if you haven’t heard), so you might notice my desire for a warm summery beach coming through a bit in my picks.

There are a couple of could-be pool party anthems, a couple ideal road trip songs, and a bunch of overall feel-good music, all of which might be described in one word as “sunny.”

Best Of 2011: Goldstoned, “Where Are You (The Astronaut’s Wife)”

One of our favorite pop artists of the year is an unassuming Berliner named Patrick Goldstein, entertainment journalist by day and, as Goldstoned,  protector of all things pop by night. “Where Are You (The Astronaut’s Wife)” is one of our favorites from a man loves the Carpenters and Roxy Music.

Best Of 2011: Tara Priya, “Rollin'”

Tara Priya has gotten plenty of ink from us over the past few months and it’s been with good reason. Her voice is a delight, her music is steeped in old school aesthetics but produced with new school flair. The first song we featured, “Rollin’,” is an MP#.com R&B Best of 2011.
