As the year comes to a close, Billboard has released their list of the 100 top artists of 2014. At number one on the list is “Steal My Girl” hit-makers One Direction, followed closely by Katy Perry and Beyonce. How does the popular music magazine determine the year’s best pop artists? From activity on the Billboard 200 albums tally and the Billboard Hot 100 singles list, as well as streaming, social and box-score data, naturally.
Seeing as Beyonce is up for a staggering eight nominations at this years’ MTV Video Music Awards, as well as being the recipient of the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, it’s only fitting that Queen Bey herself performs at the show Sunday, August 24th. MTV confirmed the news today, but it’s still hush-hush as to what song (or songs!) Beyonce will perform at the 2014 VMAs.
This year, the 68th Annual Tony Awards will take place on June 8, 2014. The ceremony will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and it will be nationally televised on CBS. Hugh Jackman will be hosting the award ceremony and interestingly, this will be his fourth time hosting the Tony Awards.

Congratulations are in order for the team behind Disney’s hit movie Frozen: their anthem “Let It Go” for the animated film’s soundtrack won Best Original Song at the 2014 Oscars! Written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the married songwriting duo proudly (and humbly) accepted the award on March 2nd at the 86th annual Academy Awards.
Everybody’s favorite boy band, One Direction, were just one of the acts who cleaned up at the 2014 BRIT Awards, taking place at London’s O2 Arena on February 19th. The fivesome took home the Global Success Award, which honors their international takeover, as well as the prize for the fan-voted Best British Video for the hilariously adorable “Best Song Ever” clip.
Russian media reports have confirmed that early-2000s-era pop stars t.A.T.u. will be performing in their home country of Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Sochi. February 7th marks the kick-off of the Olympic Games, and the Russian pair, whose popularity skyrocketed more-so because of their marketed “relationship” with one another than their music will be performing for all the world to see.
Music’s Biggest Night took place at STAPLES Center in LA yesterday evening, and surprisingly enough, predicted winner Taylor Swift didn’t clean up after all. In fact, the artists who took home the most awards were quite a surprise. Best New Artist went to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who have definitely gone from “Thrift Shop” to the top of the charts in the past year and a half. Daft Punk got lucky when they took home Best Pop Duo / Group Performance, and Paul McCartney scored the Best Rock Song award for his song with Dave Grohl, “Cut Me Some Slack”.
Sunday, January 26th marks the 56th annual GRAMMY awards, airing on CBS, and the most coveted prize that gets handed out each year is the Album Of The Year award. The nominees in the 2014 category are all very likely to walk away with the trophy for AOTY, especially because they all cover a unique genre of music respectively. But who is going to win?
There have been even more big names added to the 56th annual GRAMMY Awards performers list, and they’re getting us excited for Music’s Biggest Night. First up is the announcement of Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr “coming together” at the awards show, in honor of the 2014 Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award they’re accepting for their work with the Beatles.
Even though Kanye West’s latest album Yeezus was only released a few months ago, there is news that the rapper has already started working on his seventh studio record, planning to release it in summer 2014. Producer Rick Rubin, who is credited as an executive producer on Yeezus, is apparently on board to produce Kanye’s yet-to-be-titled album alongside Q-Tip.
