Spotlight On Country Music Month: What Is Americana?
Oct 7, 2011 6:00 AM by Michael VerityIt's funny that the most American of musical genres -- country -- would need a sub-genre called Americana. What's worse? Nobody seems to actually know what it is.
Staff Playlist: Pop Tarts
Oct 7, 2011 6:00 AM by Michael VerityPop music, by definition, can be a lot of things. Frank Sinatra was the original pop star. Paul McCartney wrote some of the poppiest ditties in the history of, um, popular music. R.E.M. claimed in their heyday they were just a "pop band." For the purpose of this playlist, what we call pop music is kind of like pop tarts: sweet treats that are the perfect way to start the day. And, both the toaster pastry and the music are portable.

Staff Playlist: Chill Out With Vacationer, Olafur Arnalds, Balam Acab, and more
Oct 6, 2011 6:00 AM by Phil TortoroliThursday is the most peculiar day of the week for me. The stress of work, life, and existential pondering weighs heavier than on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, those super-charged business days when the week ahead seems so easy, and Friday, when the hours tend to crawl at the exact pace needed to ensure your weekend will be a precious 48 hours. The best way to handle Thursdays is not to take a weekly sick day, but to start your morning off with a healthy dose of Instant-Relaxo Beats, courtesy of MP3.com.

Spotlight On Country Music Month: Bluegrass
Oct 5, 2011 6:00 AM by Michael VerityAccording to Wikipedia, "bluegrass music has mixed roots in Scottish, English, Welsh and Irish traditional music, was inspired by the music of immigrants residing in Appalachia and...influenced by the music of African-Americans." We like to think of bluegrass as the child of a handsome sailing man, a singer of sea shanties and bawdy drinking tunes, who comes home to the rolling hills of West Virginia to marry his one true love, a winsome natural born woman, a singer of folk tunes and lullabyes.
