Vanessa Carlton’s new album, Rabbits on the Run, is the most personal work of her career. Like lead single and album opener “Carousel” shows, Carlton is retreating from the sweeping production that brought her fame in 2002 with her platinum single “A Thousand Miles,” opting instead for a simpler approach of just herself and a piano.
This move has made Carlton’s music stronger by putting her main strengths – her voice and piano playing – front and center. It seems as if Carlton playing music that is meaningful to herself, not what is expected of her, and that emotional investment comes through to the listener.
The result is a quietly beautiful album that plays like a small venue solo performance from the talented songwriter.
