Tennis is an duo comprised of husband and wife Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley. The pair began writing songs together on a seven month sailing trip they took along the eastern US seaboard. On their boat, they played music to entertain themselves and when the trip was over they recorded some of their favorites and posted them online. The songs quickly elicited an enthusiastic response from online music sites like Gorilla vs. Bear and Pitchfork, and the couple’s lives quickly turned in a new direction.
After meeting in college, the Moore and Riley pulled together money (“inspired by the fact that we had both grown up landlocked,” Moore notes) and bought an old sailboat in Florida. Despite having minimal sailing experience, the two gamely set out on the high seas and traveled until the money ran out and they landed back in Denver.Alaina Moore explains that the impetus to their project was to write songs as “sort of a soundtrack for our experiences.”
Their debut album Cape Dory received critical acclaim by capturing the carefree, sunny spirit of the times Moore and Riley spent on their boat together. Now they are set to follow up with their second full length release, titled Young and Old. Check out “Origins,” one of the album’s singles.
