Rising new singer Soso joins the select group of female singers from Sweden that continue to produce some of the most exciting (and eccentric) pop singers of the last ten years. Lykke Li, Nina Persson, Fever Ray…all have paved the way for Soso reach new heights with her forthcoming self-produced release, That Time I Dug So Deep I Ended Up In China.
Now, by “self-produced,” I don’t just mean that Soso had final say on which tracks went where or what artwork to use. DIY to the core, Soso recorded, performed, and produced every sound on the album. Her press photos were taken by her boyfriend in her bathroom. She has directed and edited all of her videos. A jackie of all trades, Soso composes evocative pop music with layers of swirling electronica.
“Who’s Gonna Love Me?” features Soso belting passionately about love and insecurity in what could be her garage. The driving beat anchors her lyrics with a gravitas that counterbalances the cynicism; the layers of instrumentation warp into each other with a ferocity paralleling DIY punk – not Swedish bedroom pop. The effect can be overwhelming like a punch to gut, but for some, that means a breath of fresh air.
