After being a member of the Philadelphia based group Nouveau Riche (which also included Dice Raw from The Roots) talented soul vocalist and songwriter Nikki Jean is stepping out on her own with her debut album, Pennies in a Jar.
After hearing some of her songs you can tell why – Nikki Jean is a force to be reckoned with behind the mic. As the song “La Di Da Di Da” shows her voice is nimble and powerful, skipping along some of her lyrics and delivering others with a forceful blow. The track, like others on Pennies in a Jar, has a sweet throwback sound that references the musical history of Philadelphia.
Part of this comes from Ms. Jean – a reverent student of music – and part comes from the amazing cast of cowriters that she worked with on the album. Legends like Thom Bell, Burt Bacharach, Jeff Barry, Carole King, Bobby Braddock, Paul Williams, Jimmy Webb, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, and Carly Simon all contributed. Last but not least is the track “Steel and Feathers (Don’t Ever),” which was written 30 years ago by never recorded until its writer – one Bob Dylan – allowed Nikki Jean to do so.
Get ready for Nikki Jean because she’s is hot on the heels of fellow Philadelphia songstresses like Jill Scott and Jazmine Sullivan. You’re sure to be seeing more of her in the near future.
