My Morning Jacket, “Circuital”

Free MP3 of the Day

No longer technically an “indie”-rock band, My Morning Jacket is on its way to superstardom, with new album Circuital debuting at #5 on the Billboard charts the week of its release. The album’s title track is a stunner, combining the ethereal hums of singer/guitarist Jim James with the band’s solid, Southern-influenced rhythms.

Hailing from Kentucky, the five-piece band–Carl Broemel (guitar), “Two Tone” Tommy Blankenship (bass), Bo Koster (keyboards) and Patrick Hallahan (drums)–is known for embracing sounds ranging from Americana and psychedelic rock to funk, metal, and reggae. But whether it’s the progressive funk sounds found in 2008’s Evil Urges or the blends of folk and rock on It Still Moves, My Morning Jacket contains a universally appealing sound that nods to Prince, The Who, Neil Young, and others, yet remains completely and refreshingly original.

Aside from the title track (download it below!), highlights on Circuital include the moody, prog-rock number “Victory Dance,” heartfelt ballads “Wonderful” and “Movin’ Away,” and the heavier “Holdin’ On To Black Metal.”
