Ladytron, “White Elephant”

Free MP3 of the Day

Now that electro-pop provocateurs Ladytron have dropped a career-considering Best Of collection (released this past March), it’s time for this fascinating Liverpool pop quartet to take the next musical step with Gravity The Seducer.

Their most expansive and cinematic release yet, Gravity The Seducer is Ladytron’s fifth set of new music, recorded last summer in the Kent countryside with the help of co-producer Barny Barnicott (who also worked on their 2004 Witching Hour set).

In the words of the band’s songwriter and chief producer, Daniel Hunt, “White Elephant” is indicative of what the album is all about, “a bouquet of keys, harpsichord and strings that features Marnie’s satiny vocals.”

“In a way, it’s the seed of the record,” Hunt says. “It exemplifies the album in terms of attitude and mood.”

For our part, we hear melodic touches of old school Liverpool (a la Gerry and the Pacemakers) and the instrumental sensibility of post-Eno Roxy Music (especially in the instrumental breaks that give us the same chills we felt back in 1982, when we first listened to Avalon.)

As comfortable as a downy quilt, “White Elephant” is a dreamy soundscape that evokes visions of swirling rivers, floating feathers and birds on the wing.
