Kristin Hersh, “Coals”

Free MP3 of the Day

From her 2010 Creative Commons release, Crooked, today’s Free MP3 of the Day comes from author, entrepreneur and post-punk pioneer Kristin Hersh.

Born in Atlanta and raised in Rhode Island, Kristin Hersh is the well-known singer, guitarist and songwriter who joined her teenage stepsister, Tanya Donnelly, in 1987 to form the seminal alt-rock band Throwing Muses.

In 2007, Hersh created Coalition of Artists and Stakeholders (a.k.a. CASH Music) with L7 member Donita Sparks to foster an open source approach to music production and distribution. That’s where she released her 2010 album, Crooked, home of this classic piece of Hersh rock and roll soul called “Coals.”

An amalgamation of open-aired acoustic guitars, grinding Neil Young-inspired fuzzy electrics and floating ethereal vocals, we want to mix “Coals” in between “Hey Hey My My (Out Of The Blue)” and something obscure from the Association.
