I am Oak is Dutch singer/ songwriter Thijs Kuijken. He makes beautifully spare folk-rock. Equally adept with acoustic and electronic instruments, his music has an organic feel to it, even on a track like “Gills” where he makes use of studio electronics.
In an interview he stated that a trip to Finland was a huge inspiration for his recent music, and as you listen it’s easy to image the stark Nordic landscape.
The songs are quiet and personal – not sad, but introspective. His most recent album Oasem (pronounced “awesome”) won Best Dutch Album of the Year at the 2011 3VOOR12 Awards, and the judges described it as “Night songs, music that takes you on a journey.”
