Easy-going acoustic melodies and rich vocal harmonies makes Good Old War easily likeable. “Calling Me Names,” a single from their newest album Come Back as Rain, pulls the classic Motown trick of dressing up sad lyrics in the sweetest melody to create a dynamic listen that’s as enjoyable as it is poignant.
Addressed in the second person to a confrontational lover, the lyrics of “Calling Me Names” paint a picture of a relationship on the rocks. The laid back acoustic instrumentation and three-way harmonies, however, make it easy to forget about all your own problems. The juxtaposition of these two opposing forces makes for a beautifully bittersweet listen.
Good Old War are currently on a national tour in support of Come Back as Rain. If you enjoyed “Calling Me Names” be sure to check them out at one of their high-spirited live performances.
