Flint, Michigan-born, Philadelphia-staying Gilbere Forte‘s hanging with Asher (for the hit) and Bun (for the spliff) on his new joint, “Black Chukkas.”

“I hope you don’t go and just lay it up, ya better dunk it,” rhymes Asher, “silver and black on my feet, I’m Jim Plunkett.” Jim Plunkett gets name-dropped by Ash thirty years since he last dropped a ball on Vataha.

Bun drops rhymes on everything from black shoe polish to ice cold Miller (with cinema verite and Mr. Swisher Picker Upper in the mix for good measure).

What else you expect from Forte, the intelligent young man from Motown who brings every influence on the planet from jazzer Roy Ayers to popster Phil Collins to the mixing desk?

He’s going to influence the world,, he says. We think he already has.
