Corey Smith, “Twenty-One”

Georgia-born country singer Corey Smith earned his stripes in bar bands during his college days, and parlayed that boozy experience into what is so far his best-known song, the easygoing ballad “Twenty-One.”

Like a lot of young folks, the 17-year-old in Smith’s song can’t wait until he’s four years older, when he won’t have to go to school the next morning and can get into bars without a fake ID. But then, also like a lot of us have found out, 21 comes and goes before you know it–and you wind up looking back on that landmark birthday, and wishing, once again, that you were 21.

Or, in Smith’s case, that eager kid at 17.

Now I look back and I have to smile, cause boy it was fun
Bein’ 17, wishin’ I was 21

Smith has recorded six albums to date, including this year’s The Broken Record; but “Twenty-One,” released back in 2003, remains his best-known song to date. And it’s still a fantastic starting point as you get to know what this country boy is all about.
