As a country fan, you probably don’t need anyone to tell you “This Is Country Music,” but somehow, when Brad Paisley does, it’s like the first time you ever heard it, and it needed to be said.
Most people can’t open a song with the lyrics “you’re not supposed to say the word cancer in a song,” but Brad Paisley isn’t most people. Amongst the uninformed, ignorant folks out there, there’s a bit of a running joke that country music can just be a list of complaints or bad things that have happened. Of course, we all know that’s not true.
In “This Is Country Music,” Brad helps set the record straight. Country isn’t a list of bad things: it’s music that helps you deal with those bad things and, just as importantly, celebrate the good things.
“Are you haunted by the echo of your mother on the phone/ Cryin’ as she tells you that your brother is not coming home?/ If there’s anyone that still has pride/ in the memory of those who died/ defending the old red, white, and blue/ This is country music, and we do.”
