One of the great modern American male R&B groups – Boyz II Men have sold an incredible amount of albums and have had three of the longest running number on singles ever.
Even more impressive, however, and perhaps the real reason behind their success is how Boyz II MEn has stuck together through it all, creating music that represented their unified vision.
Boz II Men exploded onto the scene in the early 90’s with their debut album Cooleyhighharmony. Recorded with the Motown Records, the album updated the legendary label’s sound for a new decade. Hits like “Motownphilly” and “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” were big successes, and the album as a whole stands as one of the best works from Hip Hop’s era of New Jack Swing. The Boyz dubbed their sound “hip hop doo wop” and their success helped bring that 60’s style R&B into hip hop.
Following Cooleyhighharmony, Boyz II Men embarked on an unstoppable run where basically everything they touched turned to gold. Singles like “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You” and “One Sweet Day” each set new records on the single charts – “One Sweet Day,” performed with Mariah Carey, spent an astounding 16 weeks at #1. Boyz II Men were also some of the most technically proficient male R&B singers at the time, they were among the first male R&B groups to use the hyper-technical melodic embellishments used by virtuoso divas like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
Over the the next 15 years, Boyz II Men continued recording and performing together, turning out album after album of beautifully harmonized R&B. They are now putting out their tenth studio album Twenty. The soulful lead single “More Than You’ll Ever Know” shows them still at the top of their game.
