“I guess they found that picture of you/In my heart when they cut me in two.” So sings Evan Birdsong of Blackbird Harmony in his song, “Picture Of You.”
Underscored by sparse acoustic guitars and moaning pedal steel guitar, lead singer Evan Birdsong’s weary voice asks, “Just how broken must you be/To love a man like me?”
It’s classic dark American folk, reborn for the our times in the style of Jay Farrar and Lou Reed. Despite its raw sound (or maybe because of it) we find Blackbird Harmony’s simple music most compelling.
This one comes from Hardwood Exits (a record Birdsong recorded with the support of Mara Lee Miller and the band, Eleven Hundred Springs). And, for the record, it appears Birdsong has moved to on to other things since dropping this set three years ago. He’s not left much of a trail but we’ll keep our eyes open for him.
