Record of the Year is one of the most prestigious Grammy Awards because it recognizes the achievement of the entire team of artists, songwriters, producers, audio engineers and mixers that goes into making a great song. This year’s nominees represent a wide range of musical styles, from the radio pop of Katie Perry to the experimental indie-folk of Bon Iver.

2011 was an interesting year for Pop music, with trends moving towards the big club beats of European electronic music. This year’s nominees for Best Pop Group Performance, of course, are not all electronic artists, but many have incorporated elements of that sound into their styles. Their are holdouts from artists with more traditional pop styles as well though, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Well groomed Berklee educated traditionalists and dreadlocked saxophone screamers alike lay claim to the genre.
