Congratulations, Sia! The singer/songwriter, who just dropped her highly-anticipated new album 1000 Forms Of Fear, is in the top 10 section of the BIllboard Hot 100 chart for the first time as a solo artist. Her smash single “Chandelier” is responsible for the Australian pop star’s place on the chart, which is about a girl who appears to have it all on the outside, but is hurting on the inside.
After a seven year hiatus in the music world, actress/singer Hilary Duff is making a comeback with her bright, summery single “Chasing The Sun”. Duff has mostly been known for her family life these days, so when she announced she was hitting the music studio again, fans went wild. “I’m chasing the sun / Don’t miss out on the fun / Gotta get it while our hearts are young,” sings the bubblegum songstress.
Nicki Minaj made headlines around the world last week when the rapper uploaded a picture of the single cover on Instagram to her unreleased song “Anaconda.” Why was the cover such a viral hit? She bares her “assets” for all, and fans quickly spread the iconic photograph all over the Web. The audio for “Anaconda was supposed to be released on Tuesday, July 28th, but Nicki’s had to push back the release date to August 4th.
“Weird Al” Yankovic has been parodying some of pop’s biggest hits for over 30 years now, but with the release of his 14th studio album Mandatory Fun, he’s finally landed himself a number one album on the Billboard 200. He also holds another feat: Mandatory Fun is the first comedy album to chart at #1 since 1964, and it’s also the largest sales week for a comedy album since 1994.
Sunday, August 24th marks the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, and this year, Queen Bey is leading the nominations. With her eponymous fifth album freshly dropped in December of last year, the “Drunk In Love” crooner made a music video for each track off the surprise album, so it’s no surprise that she’s racked up a total of 8 nominations this year. Iggy Azalea and Eminem are both tied behind Bey with 7 nods each.
Rumour has it! It’s all speculation at this point, but there’s word that UK songstress Adele will be dropping her highly-anticipated third album by the end of the year, and then head out on a world tour for 2015. The World Music Award’s Twitter account sent out a tweet claiming that the “Someone Like You” hit-maker is planning on naming the album 25 — naturally, since her previous efforts are 19 and 21 — and she’ll go on tour as early as next year.
As one of the leading musical acts to start the punk rock movement in the 70s, it is sad to report that all original members of the Ramones are no longer with us. The final remaining member, drummer Tommy Ramone, passed away on July 11th from cancer of the bile duct, leaving no founding Ramones behind.
Reported by TMZ, it looks like Chris Brown and Drake are putting their differences behind them to spend some time in the recording studio. The “Loyal” hit-maker was photographed over a mixing board with the Canadian rapper at his side, squashing rumors that the pair have beef over romancing the elusive Rihanna.
Canadian reggae fusion band MAGIC! have been making waves ever since the release of their breezy single “Rude” back in the fall of last year. It’s proven to be a slow-burner, however, because the group’s finally made its way onto the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and in the top 10 to boot. Currently sitting at number two, just behind Iggy Azalea’s monster hit “Fancy”, the little-known band is becoming a household name.
Popular social media video app Vine has been the place to find raw, undiscovered talent over the year or so it’s been around. Many pop-artist-wannabes upload six-second clips to their profiles to promote themselves, and more than ever, these unknowns are being snatched up by major record labels. Case in point: 15-year-old Shawn Mendes, a young Canadian singer, has just been signed to Island Records: a division of Universal. And his debut single, “Life Of The Party”, is really taking off.
