Spotlight On Country Music Month

Spotlight On Country Music Month

Did you know that October is Country Music Month? It was first designated back in 1964 by the Country Music Association to celebrate the heritage of the music, the Grand Ole Opry, and the annual CMA awards, which–guess what–also traditionally happen in October or November (this year it’s Nov. 9). A not-so-strange coincidence, perhaps–but whatever the origin, it’s a good excuse to dig deep into the world of country music, including surfacing some great free country music downloads on MP3.com.

Spotlight: The Many Sub-Genres of Electronic Music

Spotlight: The Many Sub-Genres of Electronic Music

Electronic music is intrinsically linked to technology. As the latter grows at an exponential rate, the umbrella genre is never far behind, evidenced by the myriad sub-genres that have developed, flourished, and disappeared since synthesizers, drum machines, and the PC became cheaper and more accessible. It would be a fool’s mission to enumerate every branch of electronic music over the course of the past 40 years, so we’ll eat our humble pie and stick with the most notable genres of the past couple of years.

Dubstep, Juke, Nu-Disco, Future Garage

Spotlight On Electronic Influences And Beyond (Plus Free Moby MP3)

First it made its home at places like Studio 54, and then — thanks to synthesizers — it had the entire ’80s decade to call home. In the’90s, it spent most of its time at raves and now in the ’00s, electronic music might as well be considered pop. There are a lot of artists who’ve had a hand in that (from David Bowie, Radiohead to Madonna and Britney Spears) so we thank them for taking a chance on our beloved beats.

Spotlight On Grunge Gear: Apathy And Anti-Fashion

Tracing the beginnings of the grunge scene, which inadvertently turned into a national movement, is like trying to find the Space Needle in a haystack. That is to say, it isn’t hard to locate the root of all things grunge: the state of Washington.

In this week’s MP3.com Spotlight we continue ore celebration of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind by highlighting the five essentials of grunge wear. Can you guess which five? Plus we have a free MP3 from Seattle’s Kill Rock Stars band The Makers.

Guest Playlist: Chicago Instrumental Rockers Pelican Share Favorite Nirvana Songs

The instrumental band Pelican may not be a household name, but they do leave in impression. The Chicago group weaves sonic tapestries in the post-metal fashion, but shows little patience for the genre’s largely ponderous rhythms. Pelican‘s drums are rambling and lively, which changes the very meaning of the songs.

The same applies when listening to the drum beats of Dave Grohl when he was with Nirvana. In this week’s MP3.com Spotlight we commemorate the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind by gathering playlists from bands heavily inspired by the legendary group.

Yesterday we featured The Melvins, and today we feature the favorite Nirvana songs from Larry Herweg, drummer of Pelican–who also has an interesting story to share about Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
