Free MP3: Miniature Tigers, "Goldskull"

Jul 30, 2010 7:19 PM by Staff

Not unlike Beck, Miniature Tigers‘ music comes across as both laid back and ambitious. The vocals on “Gold Skull” are mellow-gold, while the blips and beats keep you awake. Problem is, this catchy tune ends to soon (only two and a half minutes), so like-minded (lazy) listeners may not have the energy to press play again. Order their new album, Fortress.

Scarlett Johansson covers Steel Train's "Bullet"

Jul 28, 2010 9:51 PM by Staff

It’s one thing for a star like Scarlett Johansson to say she’s a fan of Steel Train, but it’s a much higher praise to actually cover them. Her lounge-y, lo-fi version of “Bullet” isn’t as polished as the original, yet it has its own endearing and sexy vibe to it.  Listen below, and watch Steel Train perform “Bullet” Live On Letterman.

Free MP3: School of Seven Bells, "Babelonia"

Jul 28, 2010 7:55 PM by Staff

The heyday of Stereolab-era electronica may be in the past, however, artists like School of Seven Bells are keeping the dream alive. With minor key guitar chords and ambient synth, their latest album, “Disconnect From Desire,” connects perfectly with their introspective fan base. Listen to and download “Babelonia,” and check out the exclusive interview and performance with the group for Street Date in New York City.

Free MP3: Tunng, "Hustle (Bloc Party Remix)"

Jul 27, 2010 9:32 PM by Staff

Although they’ve been described as “folktronica,” associating Tunng to dance music would be a stretch. Bloc Party‘s remix of “Hustle” strips away the organic innocence of the original into a club-banging, drum’n’bass track (cuz that’s what Bloc Party does best). You can hear Tunng’s latest effort And The We Saw Land on Thrill Jockey Records.

Free MP3: Yvette Rovira, "Let's Go Out Tonight"

Jul 27, 2010 7:45 PM by Staff

In an effort to add some “flava” to the Free MP3 page, Yvette Rovira fits the bill perfectly. With a diverse background, the Florida native studied at Boston’s Berklee School of Music before she moved to NYC to record her debut album, which gets Giant Step‘s stamp of approval. Get closer by checking out her Facebook page.

Free MP3: Das Racist, "You Oughta Know"

Jul 27, 2010 7:21 PM by Staff

Do you recognize the sample? Hint: the original artist’s name rhymes with “Billy Joel.” Das Racist caught our attention with their hilarious (and borderline genius) faux-dance track “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.” Their Shut Up, Dude mixtape is now available.

Free MP3: Kristen Wiig, "Champion" (from McGruber)

Jul 27, 2010 6:54 PM by Staff

If you heard this out of the context of it being the MacGruber song, you might think “what is this nonsense?” But if you imagine Kristen Wiig’s (from Saturday Night Live) ironic facial expressions while recording this, you’ll enjoy it a whole lot more. The rest of the soundtrack features The Black Keys, Lightspeed Champion and “yacht rock” gems by Toto, Gerry Rafferty and Michael Bolton.

Free MP3: The Shins, "Phantom Limb"

Jul 27, 2010 5:55 PM by Staff

FROM THE MP3 ARCHIVES: Released on Sub Pop in 2007, “Phantom Limb” was the featured track on the The Shins‘ third LP, Wincing the Night Away. While James Mercer puts his efforts into his new project Broken Bells (with Danger Mouse), it’s a good time to go back and dig into the The Shins catalog. Knowing how excited he is about his new digs, it could be a while until they return.

Free MP3: Blitzen Trapper, "Heaven and Earth"

Jul 27, 2010 5:12 PM by Staff

Unless the rest of the album is filled with beat-less piano ballads, “Heaven Earth” may be an odd choice for the kick-off “single.” But Blitzen Trapper (and their label Sub Pop) are known for playing by their own rules. Eric Earley’s timeless melodies keep singing/songwriting alive and leave us anxiously wondering what the rest of Destroyer of the Void (out 6/8) will sound like.

Free MP3: Broken Social Scene, "World Sick"

Jul 26, 2010 10:54 PM by Staff

Even at huge festivals, Broken Social Scene somehow make you feel like you’re at a private party. Their friends-of-friends lineup features as little as six to as many as 20 band members, which somehow never sounds too crowded. As we like to say, “If it ain’t Broken Social Scene, don’t fix it!” Feel free to use that expression.
