There are a number of bands under the name The Shades. One is a band called The Shades formed in 1996 in Cork city, Ireland. Members included Ray Scannell and Graham White (founder members of earlier incarnation Smooth). They were strongly influenced by the likes of Portishead and Massive Attack. Their debut album Explosive was released on Grade Records in 2004. Another band is a punk band from Austin, Texas who released a 12" EP in 1980 called Ward & June Never Understood on the label Ray Gun. The group consisted of Lisa Franklin and Joe Zavaletta. Their manager was Robert Draper.
