Skull debuted in 1998 with the group Sniperz (스나이퍼군단). Under the name Skull, he took part in the albums Street HipHop Vol. 1, 2001 Daehanmingook (which is not the same as G-Dragon’s debut album, 2001 Daehanmingook Hip-Hop Flex), HipHop Mind Vol. 1, Hip-Hop Clan album, Hip-Hop Jam 2001, 2002 Daehanmingook and was featured in MC Sniper’s first album. He was also part of the Turn It Up O.S.T.
As part of the duo DAGGAZ with Yehsol (예솔), he was featured in MC haNsAi’s first album and took part in MP Hip-Hop 2001 大舶.
In 2002, he and S-Kush made their first appearance as Stony Skunk, on the 2002 Daehanmingook album, being featured on 2soo’s track, 들어봐 어때. Back then, Skull was known as “Super Mario” (and S-Kush was “Soraenoon Boy” [소래눈보이]).
Despite his hip-hop roots, Skull is a big fan of Bob Marley and is best known for his reggae voice. The videos for Boom Di Boom Di and Ragga Muffin were shot in Jamaica, and there Skull met an old man who gave him an amulet of the lion of Judah shaped like Africa, which he later got tattooed on his chest.
YG decided to have Skull start a solo career in the US, using his partnership with Morgan Carey (Mariah Carey’s brother and president of Rhythm Digital Inc). An English version of Stony Skunk’s Boom Di Boom Di was released and reached #4 on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B Singles Chart, the highest position on the Billboard charts ever reached by a Korean artist. He even opened for Reggae legend Buju Banton and was supposed to collaborate with him and Kardinal Offishall. He also planning to appear in a movie with Mariah Carey in the role of a reggae singer, according to Morgan Carey.
His first US album should have been released soon after his first single, but the Korean government is currently requiring that Skull do his military service before releasing it. He applied for a six months delay, but it was denied. He was supposed to begin his service on September 27th, 2007, but as it was revealed in October by YG, Skull had high blood pressure and cirrhosis, so his military service was delayed for three months, during which he will stay in Korea and isn’t allowed to perform.
Stony Skunk officially broke up after, Skull failed to resign his contract. He decided to create his own record label, Saja Records, which will concentrate on both his solo career in Korea and abroad.
