Mute Swimmer is a moniker of British songwriter and visual artist Guy Dale. His work under this name is characterized by dramatic shifts of mood and intensity, veering from whispered near silence to voluminous catharsis. Dale works on the interstice of cultural platforms marrying elements of performance art with the confessional intimacies of the singer-songwriter.
Much of his debut recording combined elements of folk music, minimalism and post-rock with an oneiric, poetic lyrical style. His recent work takes the process of writing and the moment of performance itself as a subject, playfully challenging narrative convention as well as audience expectations. He has quickly earned a reputation as a compelling live performer creating music that is romantic, ironic, self reflexive and hauntingly melancholic by rapid turns.
The album Mute Swimmer was released on Woodland Recordings in 2010. Other releases include; Treehouse (2005) under the name G. Dale and the E.P’s, Marriage (2007) and 30/01/08 (2009) with the group Funés. He also makes experimental sound works under the name Dala.
Mute Swimmer has performed alongside artists such as Stanley Brinks, Richard Youngs, David Thomas Broughton, Carla Bozulich, She Keeps Bees and Withered Hand among many others, performing widely in the UK and more recently Europe.
