The first musical connections that was to become Margin of Safety, was made in 2001, when Petri Koivistoinen and Jari Schroderus were introduced by a mutual friend, Sami Perälä. The meeting resulted in a recording of the three playing acoustic guitars. Koivistoinen and Schroderus felt a familiarity in each others playing that produced some very interesting improvisations with Perälä. The connection wasn't explored more until Koivistoinen came to play the bass with Schroderus and Mika Hiironniemi.
Schroderus formed a band called Jacob's Ladder with a fellow guitarist Jaakko Hänninen. The band lasted for a short while, and traumatized by the excruciating 8 hour rehearsals every Sunday, Schroderus wasn't willing to join Hänninen's new progressive rock group Slow Marching Band when he was asked to play the second guitar.
Three months later Schroderus gave in and met with Mika Hiironniemi. Very soon it was apparent that they had a connection and began planning to do some music outside Slow Marching Band. Schroderus gave Hiironniemi some demos he had done by himself. Hiironniemi, who had by that time worked as a professional drummer for about 10 years and was about to give that up to do some music he would enjoy, suggested Schroderus would re-record some guitar tracks so he could lay drums on them.
A couple of years later Schroderus and Hiironniemi were willing to get into a rehearsal room to start working on the band. They didn't have a bass guitarist. Their first thought was to ask Jaan Wessman, but that plan came to halt. Schroderus came up with the idea to ask his friend Koivistoinen to join in. At first Koivistoinen wasn't sure it would be a good idea - him being primarily a guitarist - but he was willing to give it a go. The fruits from 5 of 7 first rehearsals can be heard on Margin of Safety's first album Gonzo Jazz.
For the first six months (including their first public appearance, though unbilled) the band members were calling the band Stereoface in lack of a better name. Schroderus decided to sit down and write a list of suggestions. Margin of Safety struck a chord with the whole trio.
Margin of Safety made their first public appearance in a local jam session in autumn 2005. The band was introduced by an MC as Haukiluoma (as in Rush of Haukiluoma, from a conversation Schroderus had with the MC, Haukiluoma being the place Schroderus lives in Tampere, Finland). The band played the tunes Bits to Pieces, Soft Edges, Rhythm of Water and a Rush cover, Xanadu (which has remained in their set).
