In fact, we all know the feeling of getting a kick in the gut, a slap on the side of your head, being knocked out of your everyday-doze by total surprise. It’s a weird and nauseating experience, and only afterwards you realize how important it is.
Lack was that kind of experience. Whether on record or in a frantic live setting, they managed to suck the air out of the listener. The sound was sincere, earnest, and fun but never funny.
Honing their harsh and complex hardcore approach through the years, finding the real challenge in expressing more with less, Lack turned into a fascinatingly rocking outfit fixed on details and the tightness of simplicity in 2005. “The hardcore scene, and the environment surrounding it, has taught us a lot as a band but also as individuals,” drummer Jacob said when ‘Be There Pulse’ was released, “the hardcore/punk network helped spread our music to many parts of the world and gave us the chance to see and experience more than we could have asked for on tour. All that is not something we just put behind us because our musical focus is a little different. We don’t want to limit ourselves to one particular genre of music. We want to reach people, not just one type of people.” These guys knew how to walk the line and serve music with a message, not a message with music. Singer/guitarist Thomas once said, “Our lyrics are political, but that’s not to say that Lack is a political band. We are not interested in using political awareness to promote ourselves; but if on the other hand we can promote political awareness through our activities, then fine!”
After three albums and well over 300 shows down the line, Lack’s members mutually decided that it was the right time to leave everything behind and bring the band to an end.
“This band has always been driven by motivation, passion and love for what we are doing,” Lack said, “as of lately we must recognize that motivation is coming short, that inspiration has been drying out and that tours seem to take us down all too familiar roads. We simply recognize the fact that it is now time for the four of us to part ways, move on and let Lack be.” Despite the fact that this band is no more, their records will definitely continue to make an inspirational difference in music as a whole.
Lack consisted of Thomas Burø, Jakob Nielsen, Kasper Andersen, and Jacob Johansen.
