Kate McGarry is an American jazz singer. Born in Boston, she relocated to southern California where she became a staple on the Los Angeles jazz scene. She eventually relocated to New York, where she continues to record and perform. While she is blessed with a powerful and versatile instrument, her acoustic band also lets her the option to sing with subtlety rather than solely rely on vocal pyrotechnics. It is an unaffected, yet sophisticated approach that allows her to tackle jazz standards, folk tunes, and songs by people as varied as Joni Mitchell, Peter Gabriel, and Bjork, giving them her own special flavor.
