Jonathan Keith (born April 26, 1989) has been composing and playing music since he was old enough to walk. While kids his age were learning to ride a bike and jump over the jump rope, Jonathan was composing his first concerto. Hearing his older siblings play the piano, he decided that music was going to be a major part of his life. He went from playing by ear at a young age to composing and performing music at local events and competitions.
Jonathan has often been found gazing into space while slightly nodding his head and tapping his foot. When asked what he's thinking about, Jonathan asks "can't you hear that music?" Music has always been an integral part of his life and he lives to share his talent.
At age 9, Jonathan began his study under Dr. Irene Peery-Fox in Provo, Utah. During his studies, he won first place awards in many local and international piano competitions. He was invited several times to perform with the American Fork Symphony and the Utah Valley Symphony. At age 17, Jonathan won the All-Star award and performed Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Utah Symphony.
In 2005, he was selected to perform at the World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Anaheim, CA. He was instructed in a master class by world renown piano teachers from conservatories in Europe and from the Juilliard School of Music.
Although he loves performing and teaching, Jonathan is also an arranger and a composer. He was the national winner of the 2006 Reflections composition competition as well as the national winner of the National Association for Music Education Composition Competition. He won "best original composition" three times in a row at the International Piano Festival hosted in Caldwell, ID and Grand Junction, CO and was also awarded best improvisation, best arrangement of a pop song, and most versatile pianist (www.pianofestival.org & magazines including NPR, in a major article in the April 2003 issue of Clavier, and in other music publications such as Piano & Keyboard, Piano Today, and the London-based Piano magazine). Jonathan also composes for bands, orchestras, percussion ensembles, other solo instruments, and was recognized by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts for his Piano Concerto No. 1.
During the summer of 2007, Jonathan was in a serious car accident where he lost his best friend. As a result of the accident, Jonathan's right hand was severely injured. Through intense physical therapy, he has been able to regain most of its use over the years. In his sophomore recital at Brigham Young University, he performed piano masterpieces written for the left hand alone including the Ravel Left Handed Piano Concerto. He also performed this piece with the American Fork Symphony.
Jonathan served a mission in Oakland, CA for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Upon his return home, he has recorded his first professional album titled, "Heaven's View". It includes 11 beautifully orchestrated arrangements of well known LDS hymns that inspired him throughout his journey in California.
