That mentorship resulted in the formation of the Dideri Dudes with fellow student Brian Pertl and the release of two experimental multi-didgeridoo albums. Didgeridoo.diversions is the first solo album for James E. Cunningham. It consists of original experimental compositions/arrangements for solo didgeridoo, as well as duets for didgeridoo with saxophones, double bass, and the sounds of nature. Many of the tracks employ a melodic approach to an instrument often considered to produce only a drone or rhythmic accompaniment. A single track "The Hamburger Song" is a vocal composition that utilizes Tuvan kargyraa and höömei throat-singing techniques.
