Biography

Inka Inka, a top shelf homegrown reggae band disbanded after seven 1/2 years in October 1996, their socially and environmentally conscious sounds contained positive messages that addressed contemporary issues. The bands' live shows were groove infestations powered by explosive horn rifts. Forming in 1989, in San Jose, CA, the mainstays were Spider-Man (lead vocals, percussion), Sticky (bass), Dr. Allen (guitar), Greg Schnetz (guitar, vocals), Steve Hoffman (keyboards, vocals), Wes Anthony (saxophone), Michael Taylor (trumpet, vocals), and Henry Sarmiento (sound engineer). They've appeared with many reggae heavyweights including Third World, Jimmy Cliff, Burning Spear, Toots And The Maytals, and The Meditations. Two years after forming Wake Up And Smell The Coffee dropped on Forehead Records, two US tours made it quite popular; a second album in 1992, Reconsider Baby was a top independent reggae release. Myth Of The Machine completes the trio of excellent albums; the 1995 recording has many magical moments. They have a track on Reggae On The River USA, a compilation with tracks by and including Judy Mowatt, Angélique Kidjo, aaba Maal, and Lucky Dube. Since disbanding, the members keep busy with other projects, the horn section plays in jazz groups, and Schnetz concentrates on the business end of music. Fifteen members were in the band at various times, and contrary to rumors, they ended on a good note. ~ Andrew Hamilton, Rovi
